DAMASCUS, Feb. 18 (SANA) Syrian Minister of Justice, Mazhar al Wais, met on Wednesday with Vanessa Frazier, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation aimed at removing Syria from the UN’s blacklist of parties committing grave violations against children.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Justice in Damascus, focused on supporting national efforts to protect children, improve their conditions, and strengthen coordination with international organizations specialized in child protection.
According to the ministry, the discussions addressed mechanisms to develop protection frameworks and reinforce cooperation with the United Nations to ensure better safeguarding of children’s rights.
Last month, the UN News Center quoted Frazier as saying in a report to the Human Rights Council that “for the third consecutive year, grave violations against children in armed conflict reached unprecedented levels in 2024, with similarly alarming patterns continuing throughout 2025.”
The ministry said the meeting reflects its commitment to presenting an accurate image of national measures taken to protect children and uphold their rights, while expanding partnership with the UN to create a safer and more stable environment for children in Syria.
Syria has been listed on the UN’s blacklist of parties violating children’s rights since 2021, due to the practices and crimes committed by the ousted regime’s forces.
