Beirut, April 9 (SANA) Arab governments and United Nations officials on Wednesday condemned Israeli airstrikes targeting Beirut, the Beqaa Valley and southern Lebanon, which resulted in hundreds of casualties, according to official statements.
Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the strikes caused “hundreds of casualties among innocent civilians,” calling on the international community to intervene immediately to halt the escalation and prevent further instability in the region.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the attacks, stating they targeted several Lebanese regions and constituted a “flagrant violation of international law, international humanitarian law, and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.”
At the United Nations, spokesperson Farhan Haq said Wednesday that the organization condemns the loss of civilian lives following Israeli strikes across Lebanon, urging parties to seize what he described as an opportunity linked to a ceasefire announced between the United States and Iran to prevent further casualties.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in a press release that “the scale of killing and destruction in Lebanon today is nothing short of horrific,” warning that the developments place significant strain on what he described as a fragile peace.
The strikes came hours after the United States and Iran announced a two-week truce described as a preliminary step toward ending hostilities, with regional statements indicating the ceasefire could extend to the Lebanese front.
Lebanon witnessed one of the most intense waves of Israeli aerial attacks since March 2, targeting Beirut and areas in eastern and southern Lebanon. The strikes killed 254 people and wounded 1,165 others, according to the Lebanese Civil Defense Direct
