Evian-les-Bains, June 17 (SANA) Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) on Wednesday called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and welcomed a temporary agreement between the United States and Iran, while emphasizing the need to maintain regional stability and safeguard global energy supplies, Reuters reported.
Meeting at the summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, the leaders said diplomatic efforts should continue to address regional security concerns and prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
In a joint statement, the G7 reaffirmed support for negotiations aimed at addressing concerns related to Iran’s regional activities and nuclear program, stressing that Iran should not acquire a nuclear weapon.
The summit came as details emerged of a temporary agreement between Washington and Tehran that is expected to be formally announced in Switzerland on Friday. The agreement is intended to extend a ceasefire and pave the way for negotiations on a broader settlement.
The leaders also highlighted the importance of secure global energy routes and said efforts are underway to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on key maritime chokepoints, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Several countries expressed readiness to support implementation of the agreement and help ensure the safe movement of commercial shipping once traffic through the Strait of Hormuz resumes.
Lebanon remained one of the main issues discussed at the summit. The group renewed its call for an immediate ceasefire and urged steps aimed at reducing tensions and restoring stability in the country.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the agreement would ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon and could provide a framework for broader diplomatic engagement.
The summit also highlighted differing views on the regional implications of the conflict and future security arrangements in Lebanon, where Israeli forces remain deployed in parts of the south following months of hostilities.
The three-day G7 gathering focused on a range of international issues, including Middle East security, global energy markets and ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce regional conflicts.
