Paris, May 31 (SANA) France has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council over escalating Israeli military attacks on Lebanon, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on Sunday.
Barrot said there was no justification for the continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon or the expansion of Israeli control over Lebanese territory, according to AFP.
He said Israel was making a serious mistake by escalating in violation of international law and the ceasefire agreement reached on April 17.
The request came after the Israeli military announced an expansion of ground operations into areas north of the Litani River, alongside intensified airstrikes and shelling, raising UN concerns over the impact on civilians and infrastructure.
Southern Lebanon and the western Bekaa saw a sharp escalation on Saturday, with Israeli air raids, artillery shelling and demolition operations targeting several towns and residential areas, causing casualties, injuries and significant damage.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the death toll from Israeli strikes since March 2 had risen to 3,371, with 10,129 people injured.
