Washington, May 24 (SANA) A gunman who opened fire near the White House on Saturday night died after being shot by U.S. Secret Service agents, the agency said.
Agence France-Presse quoted the Secret Service as saying in a statement that a bystander was also wounded during the exchange of gunfire, though no details were immediately released about the person’s condition.
The agency said the suspect opened fire at security personnel near a checkpoint close to the White House before Secret Service agents returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was later taken to a local hospital where he died.
Police and security forces deployed heavily around the White House following the incident, while authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident came less than a month after U.S. President Donald Trump and several senior officials were evacuated during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner after gunfire triggered panic near the venue.
