Washington, April 13 (SANA) – Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol said Monday the agency stands ready to release additional global oil reserves if required, amid disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Atlantic Council, Birol expressed hope that further reserve releases would not be necessary, but stressed the agency is prepared to act in response to what he described as a potential “energy shock.”
According to Reuters, Birol said the war has caused one of the most severe global disruptions in the energy sector, noting that more than 80 oil and gas facilities – including production sites, transport infrastructure and refineries – have been damaged during the conflict.
Earlier in April, the IEA said that oil supply losses resulting from the conflict in the Middle East exceeded 12 million barrels per day, raising concerns about global energy stability and supply security.
