Cairo, March 29 (SANA) – The Arab League Council approved the nomination of former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy to serve as the organization’s next secretary-general, succeeding Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
The decision was announced during the council’s 165th ministerial session held in Cairo on Sunday.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said the council unanimously agreed to recommend Fahmy’s nomination to the upcoming Arab League summit, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia, for final approval. Fahmy is expected to assume the post on July 1 for a five-year term.
Fahmy served as Egypt’s foreign minister between 2013 and 2014. He was previously Egypt’s ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008 and has also worked at Egypt’s permanent mission to the United Nations.
Aboul Gheit has served as secretary-general of the Arab League since July 2016 and is completing his second consecutive term.
