Paris,March 16 (SANA) French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday called for the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz “as quickly as possible”, stressing that France is working to ensure security and stability in the region. He described the targeting of France amid the regional escalation triggered by the U.S.–Israeli war on Iran as “unacceptable”.

In a post on the X platform, Macron said he had pressed during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian for an immediate halt to what he described as “unacceptable Iranian attacks” on regional states, and for the restoration of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without delay.

He added that French actions in the region are strictly defensive and aimed at protecting French interests and the principle of freedom of navigation.

Macron also called for establishing a new political and security framework concerning Iran’s nuclear programme and ballistic missile capabilities, describing Iranian activities as “destabilizing.” He further demanded the release of detained French nationals.

On Friday, Macron reiterated that France’s position regarding the U.S.–Israeli–Iranian conflict is “purely defensive”, insisting that “nothing justifies attacking France”, following the killing of a French soldier in Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
