Nicosia, March. 3 (SANA) Cyprus ordered the evacuation of Paphos International Airport and the surrounding area of RAF Akrotiri on Monday after drones were detected heading toward the Mediterranean island.

According to the Cypriot Interior Ministry, the decision followed information received from the National Guard warning of the approaching drones.

Meanwhile, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff announced sending two frigates and fighter jets to support Cyprus.

Greek officials said the frigate Kimon was immediately dispatched to Cyprus, accompanied by a second frigate and two F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, stressing that Greece will assist Cyprus in confronting threats and illegal actions on its territory.

Earlier, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said the British air base at RAF Akrotiri was targeted overnight by an Iranian drone, causing minor material damage.
