Islamabad, Feb. 22 (SANA) — Pakistan launched its fiercest airstrikes yet on Afghan border areas Sunday, targeting seven Taliban camps and an ISIS branch, in retaliation for recent suicide attacks including one on an Islamabad mosque that killed at least 30 and wounded over 130.
Pakistan’s Information Ministry said the raids responded to Kabul’s failure to curb militants using Afghan soil for cross-border assaults. Islamabad stressed it seeks regional peace but prioritizes citizen safety, urging global pressure on Afghanistan to honor last year’s Doha agreement against supporting attacks abroad.
Afghanistan’s government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid countered on X that the strikes hit civilians in Nangarhar and Paktika provinces, killing and wounding dozens including women and children. The Afghan Defense Ministry vowed a “fitting and deliberate” response.
Tensions follow October clashes halted by a Qatar-Turkey mediated ceasefire in Doha.
