Barcelona, Sept. 22 (SANA) Director of European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Sally Shobut discussed with Acting Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean Fadi Hajjali ways to strengthen Syria’s participation in the Union’s programmes and move from the resumption of institutional participation toward practical engagement aligned with national recovery and development priorities.
The talks were held in Barcelona, Spain, on the sidelines of the Union for the Mediterranean’s third annual meeting of development actors.
The two sides also discussed follow-up and cooperation mechanisms, implementation of plans for development initiatives across the Euro-Mediterranean region, and ways to translate them into concrete projects.
The Syrian delegation included adviser Dr. Bahia Mardini and Hanadi Qouqo, head of the Western Europe Department at the Foreign Ministry’s European Affairs Directorate.
The Union for the Mediterranean was represented by Assistant Secretary-General for Sustainable Development Nisreen Al-Tamimi, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development and Employment Meltem Buyuk Karakas, and political adviser Kamal Al-Mahdawi.
Syria participated in the meeting as a member of the Union for the Mediterranean, with discussions focusing on strengthening regional cooperation and supporting sustainable development and growth among member states.
