Brussels, Jan. 5 (SANA) The European Union called on Sunday for calm and restraint from all parties in Venezuela to avoid further escalation and ensure a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
According to the European Commission’s website, the statement was endorsed by 26 EU member states. It called for respect for the will of the Venezuelan people to determine their own future and for a solution to the crisis in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter.
The statement also emphasized the importance of combating transnational organized crime and drug trafficking, which represent significant global security threats. The EU stressed the need to address these issues through continued cooperation, while fully respecting international law and the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had arrested Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife during a military operation inside Venezuela, and had flown them out of the country in preparation for their trial on charges related to drugs and terrorism.
