Damascus, Jan. 4 (SANA) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern on Saturday over the recent escalation in Venezuela, describing the US military operation there as a “dangerous precedent” in international relations and warning of potential repercussions for regional stability.
According to a statement on the UN News website, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stressed the need to respect international law and the UN Charter, calling on all parties in Venezuela to engage in inclusive dialogue that guarantees the rule of law and protects human rights.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, criticized the operation, warning of “catastrophic consequences” for the region and urging restraint while adhering to international law.
The UN Human Rights Office, in a post on X, emphasized that protecting the Venezuelan people and preserving their dignity must be the top priority, noting that any action should be guided by the principles of international peace and security and should avoid military escalation.
These statements came after US President Donald Trump announced that US forces had captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in a military operation inside Venezuela and had taken them out of the country.
