Brussels, Feb. 27 (SANA) The European Union announced €63 million in humanitarian funding to support vulnerable communities across Somalia as the country faces worsening drought, ongoing conflict, displacement, and rising food prices.
The funding comes amid unprecedented food insecurity, with around 6.5 million people—nearly one-third of the population—facing hunger and an estimated 1.85 million children under the age of five at risk of severe acute malnutrition.
In a statement Thursday, the European Commission said the funding will prioritize life-saving assistance, including health and nutrition services, treatment for severe malnutrition, emergency cash support, water and sanitation, protection programs, and education.
The assistance will be delivered through humanitarian partners on the ground to ensure aid reaches those most affected in a timely, inclusive, and effective manner.
The Commission said the latest aid package brings total EU humanitarian assistance to Somalia since 2017 to more than €750 million.
