Twenty-three people were killed and 11 others injured in a supermarket explosion in the northern Mexican city of Hermosillo, local officials said.
Agence France-Presse quoted Sonora state governor Alfonso Durazo as saying that “a number of the victims were minors,” adding that preliminary investigations suggest the blast was likely caused by a malfunction in an electrical transformer inside the store.
The state prosecutor’s office said in a statement that the explosion appeared to be accidental. Firefighting teams continued to work at the scene as investigators prepared to determine the exact cause.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences on X to the families and loved ones of those who died.
Local authorities canceled planned festivals in the affected area.
