Lebanese president urges western powers to press Israel on ceasefire compliance

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Friday called on the international community, including the European Union and the United States, to pressure Israel to abide by the ceasefire agreement announced last November.

Speaking during a meeting with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Aoun urged greater support for the Lebanese Army to deploy along the country’s southern border and help extend state authority across all Lebanese territory.

“We are not advocates of war; we have experienced it and learned its lessons. Our goal is to restore stability to Lebanon, starting from the south,” Aoun said, according to the state-run National News Agency.

He emphasized that Lebanon favors negotiations to reclaim occupied land, secure the release of detainees, and achieve full Israeli withdrawal from disputed areas, but said Israel’s response has been “more attacks, not dialogue.”

Aoun accused Israel of showing “a clear preference for aggression” and said the international community bears responsibility for ensuring Lebanon’s right to security and stability.
