Daraa, Feb. 17 (SANA) A delegation from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and UN agencies operating in Syria visited Daraa province on Tuesday to assess the humanitarian situation and discuss strengthening coordination and directing funding to the most vulnerable areas, particularly the western countryside and the Yarmouk Basin.
Representative of the United Nations Development Programme office (UNDP), Musab Abazeid, said the visit aims to enhance field coordination among UN organizations in Daraa and expand cooperation with the governorate and the Directorate of International Cooperation to organize targeted visits to areas of greatest need and broaden the base of beneficiaries.
Abazeid noted that discussions covered preparations for field visits to the Yarmouk Basin and the western countryside, followed by assessment visits to northwestern areas of the province, including Al-Sanamayn, Jassim and Inkhil. He said challenges were reviewed, most notably declining and limited funding in recent years due to the diversion of resources to other regional crises, which has affected funding allocated to Daraa.
Executive Office member in charge of organizations’ affairs in Daraa, Hussein Nusairat, said the delegation discussed humanitarian conditions in the province, particularly in the Yarmouk Basin. He added that upcoming field tours will aim to assess conditions on the ground, identify priorities and compare findings with the results of a multisector needs assessment report expected to be issued soon.
The United Nations has played a central role in addressing humanitarian needs and supporting early recovery across Syria. OCHA coordinates emergency assistance and mobilizes aid for the most vulnerable populations, while the UNDP focuses on resilience, early recovery, and the restoration of basic services and livelihoods, contributing to sustainable recovery efforts in Syria.
