WHO warns Ebola response falling behind outbreak despite low global risk
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Geneva, June 25 (SANA) The World Health Organization said the response to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring Uganda remains insufficient, warning that efforts to contain the virus are failing to keep pace with its spread.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the global risk posed by the outbreak remains low, while urging countries and partners to scale up measures to contain the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, Reuters reported.

Tedros said contact tracing, treatment capacity and safe burial operations remain inadequate, underscoring the pressure on health systems in the affected areas.

The WHO said the current outbreak has recorded the highest number of confirmed cases during its first month compared with previous Ebola outbreaks.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, the epicenter of the outbreak, has reported 1,094 confirmed cases, including 277 deaths. Neighboring Uganda has confirmed 20 cases and two deaths.
