
Damascus, Jan. 20 (SANA) Syria’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Marwan al-Halabi, met on Monday with a visiting delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO) to discuss ways to support the country’s health sector, with a focus on mental health services, scientific research, and the potential establishment of drug addiction recovery centers.
According to the ministry, the talks addressed Syria’s national health strategy, priority areas for international assistance, and the challenges facing the health system. They also covered efforts to raise awareness of drug abuse risks and strengthen prevention and treatment programs.

Al-Halabi outlined initiatives aimed at improving community and student awareness, organizing workshops on drug abuse and addiction, and providing medical and academic support through psychological counseling. He emphasized the need for joint protocols with international partners to enhance coordination and effectiveness.
WHO Regional Director Hanan Balkhy said the organization is ready to provide support to help ease pressure on Syria’s health system. She noted that the visit aimed to review the

ministry’s approach to training, mental health, and addiction treatment, as well as the feasibility of establishing specialized recovery centers. Balkhy also highlighted the importance of aligning medical curricula with public health needs and strengthening applied research.
