Damascus, Oct. 21 (SANA) Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi met with a delegation from the Syrian American Council on Wednesday to discuss scientific cooperation between Syrian and American universities, recognition of degrees held by Syrian academics and doctors living in the United States who wish to return to Syria, and potential support for the country’s higher education sector.
During the meeting at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus, al-Halabi praised the efforts of members of the Syrian community in the United States and the support and services they provide to their home country.
He said the ministry is working to launch an electronic application for degree equivalency to streamline the process and allow applications to be handled remotely.
Al-Halabi added that the ministry aims to build partnerships with international organizations and institutions to rehabilitate deteriorating infrastructure, advance digital transformation and automate student services and operations at university hospitals. He also stressed the need to establish a joint communication committee to discuss potential areas of cooperation with the Syrian American Council.
Delegation head Sumaya Hamadmad, a member of the council’s board, said the organization works to connect Syrians in the United States with the needs of communities in Syria, supporting initiatives and projects designed to address those needs.
She said the meeting aimed to identify opportunities for cooperation and support, as well as challenges facing Syria’s higher education sector, in order to explore ways to address them.
Hamadmad also highlighted the importance of simplifying degree-recognition procedures for Syrian doctors and university professors in the United States to facilitate their return and enable them to contribute to their country.
Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Syrian American Council represents Syrian communities in the United States and works to strengthen ties between expatriates and Syria, supporting development and humanitarian initiatives through volunteer and training programs.
