Daraa, Sept. 2 (SANA) Education authorities in southern Syria’s Daraa province have completed renovation and maintenance work at about 200 schools and are preparing to open seven new ones as students return for the new academic year.
The work was carried out under the Abshiri Hauran campaign as part of efforts to improve educational infrastructure and provide students with suitable learning environments, according to the Daraa Directorate of Education.
Firas al-Khubi, head of the directorate’s School Buildings Department, told SANA that the seven new schools would enter service with the start of the academic year.
Daraa has 1,022 schools, of which 942 are currently operational, said Khaled al-Masri, head of the directorate’s Statistics and Planning Department.
Al-Masri said education authorities were coordinating with local bodies and international organizations to rehabilitate and maintain damaged schools, particularly those affected during the rule of the deposed regime, with the aim of returning more facilities to service.
Schools across Syria suffered extensive damage during the war. The Education Ministry is working to rehabilitate damaged facilities and build new schools, particularly in areas where displaced Syrians and refugees have returned.
