Seoul, Oct. 27 (SANA) An international nuclear energy conference opened Tuesday in Incheon, South Korea, bringing together around 800 participants to discuss advances in nuclear technology, safety regulations and the industry’s growth prospects.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) event, held roughly every four years, is attended by government officials from 60 member states, industry representatives and non-governmental organizations, Yonhap News Agency reported.
South Korean Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon said rising investment in nuclear energy reflected growing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and advanced industries.
“Nuclear energy is a major energy source capable of providing large amounts of low-carbon electricity around the clock,” Bae said in his opening remarks.
He said global nuclear power capacity could more than triple by 2060 compared with last year’s level.
Bae also outlined plans to make South Korea a global hub for nuclear technology manufacturing, while maintaining safety standards in the operation and decommissioning of existing facilities and the development of new technologies.
In a video address, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi highlighted nuclear power’s growing role in meeting global energy needs.
Grossi urged governments to maintain their existing nuclear capabilities and make use of the agency’s international cooperation platforms.
