Damascus, June 19 (SANA) Syrian and Indian officials discussed strengthening cooperation in agriculture and exploring ways to revive Syria’s silk industry during a meeting at the Indian Embassy in Damascus on Thursday.

Mohammad Jannat, head of the Damascus and Damascus Countryside Chamber of Agriculture, and Indian Chargé d’Affaires Renu Yadav reviewed opportunities to expand cooperation, exchange scientific expertise and support the development of the agricultural sector in both countries.

The discussions focused on benefiting from India’s expertise in agricultural sciences, particularly in silkworm breeding and silk production, as part of efforts to support the revival of Syria’s traditional silk industry.

Jannat said the Chamber is working to restore silk production because of its economic, cultural and rural development value in Syria after it has declined in recent years.

The two sides also discussed cooperation in nurseries and agricultural production inputs, including the possibility of importing plant and animal production supplies from India to help reduce costs for Syrian producers and enhance competitiveness.

They further reviewed mechanisms for re-exporting products to international markets and explored ways to expand economic and trade cooperation between Syria and India.

Yadav expressed India’s readiness to cooperate with the Chamber and relevant Syrian institutions. The two sides agreed to continue consultations and work toward signing memorandums of understanding with relevant Indian authorities to facilitate import and export activities.
