Damascus, May 11 (SANA) Syrian and Egyptian officials and business representatives discussed ways to expand trade and investment cooperation during a joint economic meeting held virtually on Sunday, amid efforts to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

The meeting brought together Damascus Chamber of Commerce Chairman Issam Ghreiwati, government officials, business leaders and economic representatives from Syria and Egypt through a session held via Google Meet.

Participants discussed measures aimed at increasing bilateral trade, opening new export opportunities and supporting the formation of a Syrian-Egyptian Business Council expected to be established soon from the Egyptian side.

Talks also addressed challenges affecting trade exchange and ways to simplify procedures between the two countries.

Discussions covered a range of economic issues, including recognition of Syrian goods, the resumption of air travel, industrial integration and cooperation in free trade.

Participants also discussed expanding participation in trade exhibitions, benefiting from the geographic location of both countries in transportation and logistics services and preparations for a joint Syrian-Egyptian investment forum.

Ghreiwati called on Egyptian investors and business leaders to explore investment opportunities in Syria, saying the meeting could help advance economic partnership between the two countries.

He also stressed the importance of reactivating the Arab Trade Agreement to support inter-Arab trade, adding that Syrian industry had begun recovering production capacity and development momentum.

The meeting follows a Syrian-Egyptian economic forum held in Damascus in January with participation from public- and private-sector representatives from both countries.
