Syria moves toward global digital economy, communications minister says
Syrian Communications and Information Technology Minister

Damascus, May 9 (SANA) Syria is gradually moving toward a global digital economy that supports development and modernizes public services, Communications and Information Technology Minister Abdul Salam Haykal said on Saturday.

Speaking at the launch of the country’s first electronic payment trial, Haykal said financial technology is essential for economic development, improving services and increasing the efficiency of daily transactions.

He added that strict regulatory procedures are key to building trust in digital transformation and in developing a modern financial system.

Haykal said cooperation with Visa and Mastercard would help develop Syria’s digital financial infrastructure in line with international standards.

He also pointed to a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Central Bank of Syria, saying it aims to regulate, enable and safeguard the country’s emerging financial technology sector.
