Abu Dhabi, April 28 (SANA) The United Arab Emirates announced it will withdraw from the OPEC oil producers’ group and the wider OPEC+ alliance, with the decision set to take effect on May 1, 2026, citing long-term energy strategy and evolving global market dynamics.
In a statement carried by state news agency WAM, the UAE said the move follows a comprehensive review of its production policies and future capacity, and reflects its aim to respond more flexibly to global energy demand.
The country added that the decision aligns with plans to expand domestic production and strengthen its position as a reliable supplier, particularly amid geopolitical volatility affecting supply routes, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The UAE, an OPEC member since 1967, said its exit comes after decades of cooperation in supporting oil market stability and coordination among producing nations. It stressed that the decision does not signal a shift away from its commitment to market stability, but rather enhances its ability to adapt to changing conditions.
Officials said the country will continue to increase output gradually in line with demand, while maintaining cooperation with international partners and investing across the energy sector, including oil, gas, renewable energy and low-carbon technologies.
The move has raised questions about OPEC cohesion, as the group faces internal differences and mounting geopolitical pressures, while Gulf exporters continue to face challenges shipping supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
