Washington, Feb. 20 (SANA) – The US trade deficit reached a new record level last year, totaling $1.24 trillion, despite broad tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
According to CNN, US Commerce Department data showed the goods and services trade gap widened in December to $70.3 billion.
The network reported that the overall annual goods deficit stood at $901.5 billion, while official data indicated that the US trade deficit with China narrowed over the full year.
Trade flows in the US economy witnessed sharp fluctuations in 2025 after Trump imposed new tariffs on goods from most trading partners in a bid to reduce the trade deficit, according to the report.
The average effective tariff rate rose to its highest level since the 1930s.
The narrowing of the deficit with China followed a year of reciprocal tariff escalation between Washington and Beijing before tensions eased later in the year, the network said.
