Latakia, Sept. 28 (SANA) Latakia Port received 16 new forklifts on Monday as part of efforts to expand cargo-handling capacity and modernize operations, the General Authority for Borders and Customs said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
Each forklift can lift up to 3 tons and will join the port’s existing fleet of machinery and equipment, helping speed up loading and unloading and improve the movement of cargo, the authority said.
The equipment is expected to help reduce the time ships spend at berth and comes as rehabilitation and service upgrades continue at the port.
According to the authority, Latakia Port received 467 ships during the first eight months of 2026. Of those, 221 carried general cargo totaling about 1.752 million tons.
Another 217 were container ships carrying more than 194,000 containers and about 1.543 million tons of cargo.
The authority said it is continuing to rehabilitate Syrian ports and border crossings and upgrade their equipment as part of efforts to improve operational readiness and support trade and maritime transport.
The development program includes simplifying customs procedures, facilitating imports and exports and increasing transit traffic, alongside providing the port with new machinery and equipment to improve efficiency and handling capacity.
