Syria signs final agreements to build four power plants with 5,000-megawatt capacity

Syria’s Ministry of Energy signed final agreements on Thursday with a consortium of international companies, led by the Qatari-based UCC Holding, to build four new power plants with a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts. The plants will use a combination of natural gas and solar energy.

According to a statement from the Ministry on its Telegram channel, the projects include the construction of a 1,200-megawatt plant in northern Aleppo, two plants in Deir Ezzor and Zayzoun with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts each, and an 800-megawatt plant in Mahardah. In addition, a series of solar energy projects, totaling 1,000 megawatts, will be developed across four different locations.

This project marks one of the largest strategic energy initiatives in Syria since 2011 and is part of the Ministry’s broader plan to rehabilitate the national electricity grid, improve operational efficiency, and ensure the sustainable stability of the power supply.

Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir, in a statement following the signing, called the project a major milestone in the development of Syria’s energy infrastructure. He emphasized that the project would “strengthen national energy security, stabilize the electrical grid, and open the door to more international investments in sustainable development projects.”

The Minister added that the Ministry’s vision is to rebuild the energy sector on scientific and economic principles, balancing operational efficiency with environmental sustainability.

The Ministry has stressed that these projects are critical to the country’s broader goal of achieving energy independence and reducing reliance on foreign energy imports.
