Syria to Introduce New Banknotes Without Images or Symbols in Currency Overhaul

Syria’s Central Bank (CBS) will introduce a new series of banknotes in six denominations that contain no images or symbols, in a step toward modernizing the national currency and improving transparency, the governor said.

CBS Governor Abdulkader al-Husrieh announced the move on Wednesday, saying the upcoming notes will include small, medium, and large denominations to enhance cash circulation and meet daily transaction needs.

“The new banknotes are designed to simplify verification and align with international best practices,” al-Husrieh told SANA.

The governor said the CBS would release full specifications, including the denominations, sizes, and security features, once printing and issuance are finalized. The notes are expected to replace damaged and outdated bills, but not to increase the total money supply.

“This is a modernization measure, not a monetary expansion,” al-Husrieh noted, stressing that the rollout will be accompanied by targeted monetary policies to regulate liquidity and stabilize prices.

The move comes as Syria continues to face economic headwinds, with inflation, currency depreciation, and limited cash availability affecting both businesses and households. Officials hope the redesigned currency will help restore confidence in the Syrian pound and improve financial efficiency
