Syria and Lebanon approve measures to activate cross- transportation

Damascus, SANA- Lebanese-Syrian Joint Technical Committee for Land Transport approved Wednesday a set of understandings to enhance the movement of goods and passengers between the two countries.

The committee concluded its meetings, held on August 12 and 13 at the Ministry of Transport in Damascus, with agreements to coordinate with the relevant authorities in both countries to study the possibility of exempting trucks and public transport vehicles from entry and exit fees, in addition to adhering to the provisions of the 1993 agreement regulating and activating the land transport of people and goods between the two countries.

The agreed also to reduce customs duties and address any problems facing vehicles and trucks at the border or within the territory immediately.

The Syrian delegation was headed by Deputy Minister of Transport for Land Transport Affairs, Mohammad Rahhal, while the Lebanese side was headed by Director General of Land and Maritime Transport, Ahmed Tamer.

Land transport cooperation between Syria and Lebanon is based on an agreement signed in 1993 regulating the movement of people and goods.

Recent meeting in Damascus comes within the framework of a joint effort to activate this agreement and overcome obstacles to freight and passenger traffic, thus enhancing economic exchange and keeping pace with regional and trade changes.
