Damascus, June 5 (SANA) The Arab Cultural Center in Al-Midan neighborhood in Damascus hosted a cultural event titled “Shadow Puppetry and the Wonder Box,” bringing together traditional performing arts and educational storytelling inspired by Syrian folk heritage.
The program featured shadow theatre, the traditional Hakawati narrative form, and the “Wonder Box,” alongside a series of stories addressing cultural values, Eid al-Adha traditions, environmental awareness, respect for parents and the promotion of creative thinking among children.
Artist Anwar Baker said the initiative targets both children and adults, aiming to preserve authentic customs while strengthening awareness of Syria’s cultural legacy. He added that the shadow puppetry characters and the Wonder Box were handcrafted using recycled materials and drew inspiration from Damascene culture and well-known folk figures such as Karakoz and Awaz.
Baker noted that the project also focuses on educational storytelling, presenting simplified messages on social, health and environmental topics in a format designed to engage younger audiences.
The event forms part of Intangible Heritage Week organized by the Damascus Directorate of Culture, which aims to preserve traditional arts and introduce younger generations to their role in safeguarding Syrian cultural identity.
