Damascus, April 28 (SANA) The Children’s Book Fair, which concluded Sunday at the National Library in Damascus, highlighted the importance of reading and renewed discussion on advancing children’s publishing in Syria.
The event combined book displays with interactive activities, plays, competitions and educational sessions aimed at strengthening children’s connection to reading.
Deputy Minister of Culture Ahmed Sawaf said the fair created an engaging cultural space that encouraged children to read and learn, adding that it is part of broader efforts to build an educated generation.
Head of the Syrian Publishers Union Atef Namous said the fair was organized in a short time, affecting participation and space, but noted that future editions could see broader involvement and greater diversity in printed, digital and interactive books.
He stressed the need for cooperation among cultural institutions to produce content reflecting Syria’s evolving cultural identity.
Rana al-Homsi, Director of Talents at the Ministry of Education, said the fair helped strengthen children’s relationship with books, develop self-expression and support talent beyond screen-based activities.
She called for more educational and psychological guidance books and proposed establishing a publishing house affiliated with the ministry to support young readers.
Self-development trainer Hamza al-Hamzawi described the fair as a valuable initiative and suggested holding it more than once a year, especially during school holidays, to increase attendance.
Participants said such events provide a platform for publishers and educators to exchange ideas, improve content and strengthen reading habits amid growing digital challenges.
