Latakia, April 27 (SANA) Syria’s Culture Minister Mohammad Yassin Saleh inspected key heritage sites in Latakia on Monday and reviewed ongoing restoration work, while discussing plans to expand cultural events in the coastal city.
During a field visit, al-Saleh toured several landmarks, including the Latakia National Museum, the Arch of Triumph, the old market, a historic cinema and the ancient city of Ugarit. He reviewed restoration and maintenance efforts and assessed requirements to improve site readiness for visitors.

The minister said the Ministry, in coordination with the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums and the Tourism Ministry, is working to advance plans that go beyond restoration to include improved management and promotion of heritage sites as tourist destinations.
He also discussed the potential use of Latakia’s sports complex to host cultural events and festivals, noting that the city’s infrastructure could support large-scale programs aimed at boosting tourism and public engagement.
Saleh highlighted the historical significance of the coastal region, with particular focus on Ugarit, widely regarded as one of the earliest centers of alphabetic writing.
Latakia is home to some of Syria’s most important archaeological sites, and officials say preserving and promoting this heritage remains a key priority.
