Discussions with Russian official to boost oil and gas cooperation

Damascus, SANA – Oil and gas cooperation between Syria and Russia and the prospects of Russian companies establishing vital investment projects in Syria were the focal points of discussion between Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi and Gisa Guchetl of the Union of Oil and Gas Producers of Russia during a meeting on Thursday.

Such possible projects might include rehabilitating the oil fields damaged in terrorist attacks and exploration for and extraction of oil and gas in Syria.

Al-Halqi reviewed during the meeting various current and future investment opportunities in Syria and the plans of reconstruction in the post-crisis period, saying that the government counts heavily on Russian companies to play an effective role in terms of setting up development projects in Syria in cooperation with their Syrian counterparts, particularly in the gas and oil sectors.

Guchetl, for his part, responded positively to the Premier’s invitation, saying that the Russian oil companies are interested in investing in Syria, an interest that goes in line with as the Russian government’s keenness on enhancing and developing the capabilities of Syrian people and supporting them in their crisis.

Cooperation in oil and gas was further discussed in more detail during a meeting between Guchetl and Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources Sulaiman al-Abbas, with the prospects including investing in shale gas and oil in Syria.
