Homs and Hasaka Governors discuss cooperation with UNICEF, ICRC

Homs/Hasaka, SANA – Homs Governor Talal al-Barazi discussed on Sunday with Director of the Office of Emergency Programmes at the UNICEF Afshan Khan prospects of cooperation in health, education, and environmental sanitation.

The two sides also evaluated the programs implemented by UNICEF in the province in 2014, with 100% of these programs having been implemented completely. They also discussed plans and directives for 2015.

Al-Barazi stressed the need to provide the requirements for repairing damaged schools, which number around 1,200 in the province, in addition to providing psychological support to children affected by the current circumstances in the country.

He asserted the government’s readiness to provide all necessary facilitations to the UNICEF and cooperate with it to implement its programs.

After the meeting, Khan told journalists that the priority now is repairing damaged schools and investing in the education sector, saying that UNICEF seeks to access children in all areas and provide their needs in terms of education, health, and nutrition.

She also voiced optimism over the work carried out by volunteers at the organization in Homs.

The meeting was attended by UNICEF Resident Representative Hanna Singer.

Meanwhile, Hasaka Governor Mohammad Za’al al-Ali met International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) relief department official Dusan Vukotic, discussing the ongoing cooperation between the two sides which has resulted in implementing various water projects in Hasaka countryside.

Al-Ali voiced hope for expanding cooperation with the ICRC in relief work, affirming readiness to provide all necessary facilitations to help the Committee carry out its humanitarian task.

For his part, Vukotic said that two medical shipments will be sent to the hospitals of Hasaka and Qamishli cities within the next few days, and that a supply line for relief via the Nseibin border crossing point with Turkey has been approved, adding that work is underway to prepare storage sites for relief supplies that should begin arriving by the second week of February.
