Moscow: combating terrorism should be done without double standards

Moscow, SANA – Russia stressed that countering terrorism should be carried out on a wide-scale without double standards, Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement comes following a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov and the UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura on the sidelines of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday.

The sharp escalation in the terrorist activity in Syria and Iraq poses a serious threat to regional security and stability,” the ministry said.

The statement stressed that there is no substitute to the political diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria based on Geneva Communiqué issued on June 30 , 2012.

For his part, De Mistura pointed out that he plans to hold an intensive dialogue with the Syrian parties and global powers, including Russia, in an effort to search for ways to resolve the crisis in Syria.

Earlier, in a phone call with his US counterpart john Kerry, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for the necessity of respecting Syria’s sovereignty in the war against the so-called “the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria” terrorist organization.
