New York, SEPT 25 (SANA) — Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Deputy Chairman Abdullah al-Alimi Bawazir warned that the Houthi militia’s exploitation of maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab as a means of blackmail poses a threat not only to Yemen, but to the global economy as a whole.
Speaking during the high-level general debate of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, Bawazier said that lasting maritime security in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab and the Gulf of Aden cannot be achieved as long as an armed militia operating outside the authority of the state remains in control of areas along these vital waterways.
According to UN News, Bawazier urged the international community not to be swayed by what he described as “false promises” by the Houthi militia, warning that replacing sustainable maritime security with temporary and changeable assurances would amount to a “strategic mistake.”
He stressed that the militia has exploited the absence of a firm international position to expand its influence and military capabilities, while continuing to undermine efforts aimed at restoring stability in Yemen and securing the region’s vital maritime routes.
Bawazier said the Yemeni government has dealt responsibly and positively with regional and international initiatives aimed at achieving peace and ending the suffering of the Yemeni people, making significant concessions in this regard. However, he claimed that the Houthi militia had responded with intransigence and used periods of truce to bolster its military capabilities at the expense of the needs of the Yemeni people.
