Syria and the UK discuss enhancing cooperation in emergency response and demining

Damascus, SANA – Syria’s Minister of Emergencies and Disaster Management Raed Al-Saleh discussed with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation in the fields of emergency response and priority issues, most notably demining and unexploded ordnance, and the removal of debris out of the affected areas.

During a meeting the two sides discussed the field challenges facing the Civil Defense firefighting teams, which have been extinguishing fires in the northern Latakia countryside for more than three days, and the need for technical and logistical support.

Al-Saleh noted that the support currently facilitates humanitarian operations and promotes public safety as part of an integrated plan for response and building the national capacity of civil defense personnel.

Firefighting teams face many difficulties while extinguishing fires that have been burning for days in the forests of the northern Latakia countryside, due to the prevalence of unexploded bombs and mines, the rugged mountainous terrain and wind speeds.

Meanwhile, The United Kingdom’s representative to Syria, Anna Snow, reiterated her country’s intention to continue cooperating with the Civil Defense and the new government in Syria.

“We are proud of our long-standing support for the Syrian Civil Defense and look forward to continuing our partnership with them and the new government,” Snow said in a post on the X platform today: “We are proud of our long-standing support for the Syrian Civil Defense and look forward to continuing our partnership with them and the new government.”
