Thomas Barrack: Syrian people are capable of building the future

Ankara, SANA-U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack stressed that the challenges in Syria are clear and enormous, but the Syrian people who overthrew the former Assad regime have the capacity to adapt and build a future. He called for giving the new Syrian administration a chance to build the state.

In an interview with Al Jazeera on Sunday, Barrack stressed that the US had nothing to do with the change in the former regime in Syria, but rather the Syrian people were the ones who overthrew the Assad regime, as part of their pursuit of a new way of life and lifestyle.

“The current administration in Syria represents an opportunity, and we must give it that opportunity. That is why US President Donald Trump made a decision on May 14 to lift sanctions on Syria in support of the Syrians in building their country.” He said.

Barrack explained that the challenges in Syria are clear and enormous, not to mention the devastation and destruction since 2011, with the infrastructure in ruins and the lack of a banking or health system. He called on the Gulf states and Turkey, to cooperate with the Syrian government, and emphasized the need to integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces into the Syrian state.

He emphasized the need for Syria to find its own path, its own state, and its own army, in addition to its engagement with neighboring countries.

Barrack added that the US has begun reducing the number of its bases in northeastern Syria due to the success of its mission, which focuses on supporting stability and combating the terrorist organization ISIS.
