US Envoy to Syria: Lifting sanctions empowers Syrians to open the door to peace and rev

Washington, SANA-Tom Barrack, the US Special Envoy to Syria, has affirmed that the fall of the Assad regime has opened the door to peace in Syria, noting that lifting sanctions will enable its people to fully seize this opportunity.

“A century ago, the West imposed maps, mandates, pen-drawn borders, and foreign rule,” Barrack stated Sunday on his X account. “The Sykes-Picot Agreement divided Syria and the broader region for imperial gains, not peace. This mistake has cost generations dearly, and we will not repeat it.”

He added, “The era of Western intervention is over. The future lies in regional solutions, partnerships, and diplomacy built on respect. As President Donald Trump emphasized in his Riyadh speech on May 13th: ‘The days of Western intervention, where interveners traveled to the Middle East to lecture you on how to live and manage your affairs, are gone.'”

Barrack continued, “Syria’s tragedy was born from division, and its revival must come through dignity, unity, and investment in its people. This begins with truth, accountability, and working with the region, not around it.”

The US Envoy concluded, “We, along with Turkey, the Gulf states, and Europe, stand shoulder to shoulder with the Syrian people themselves. And this time, it’s not with soldiers, lectures, or imaginary borders. With the fall of the Assad regime, the door to peace is open, and by lifting sanctions, we are finally empowering the Syrian people to open that door and discover a new path to prosperity and security.”
