Foreign Ministry:A unified Arab position in support of the Syrian Arab Republic

Damascus, SANA- Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates confirmed that the Arab League Council at the ministerial level issued a statement on Syria following the ministerial meeting, held Wednesday, in Cairo in the presence of the Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, in which the commitment to preserving the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria, and respecting the choices of the Syrian people and supporting them during the transitional period was emphasized.

The statement affirmed support for and encouragement of the transitional government of the Syrian Arab Republic, and condemned the violence that erupted along the Syrian coast last March, which began with an attack by remnants of the former regime on army and security forces, the statement also rejected foreign interventions aimed at destabilizing and undermining civil peace.

The Arab League statement condemned the Israeli attacks on Syrian territory and its attempt to inflame internal conflicts, it also denounced the incursion of Israeli forces into the buffer zone in Syria in the areas of Mount Hermon and the provinces of Damascus countryside, Quneitra and Daraa, which is a blatant violation of international law and the disengagement agreement concluded between Syria and Israel in 1974, calling on the Council Security must take action to stop these attacks and violations.

The statement called for the lifting of all unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria, accelerating the pace of recovery and reconstruction and contributing to the voluntary return of displaced persons.
It also welcomed the easing of US and European sanctions on Syria, urging donor countries to swiftly fulfill their pledges to support the humanitarian situation in Syria.

The statement emphasized the importance of the United Nations’ role in supporting the Syrian government through full cooperation, as well as the role of the Arab League in supporting Syria during the transitional period, strengthening joint Arab cooperation in Syria, and continuing to provide humanitarian aid to Syria.

The unified Arab statement came in light of the tireless efforts exerted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates to restore Syria to its former status and position within the Arab League and to strengthen joint Arab cooperation with the aim of creating a unified Arab position following the estrangement with Arab brethren resulting from the policies of the former regime.
