Arab Group and African countries in Security Council condemn Israeli attacks on Syria

New York, SANA-The Arab Group and three African countries, members of the Security Council, condemned the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, called for their cessation and the need to comply with international laws.

Libya’s UN Representative, Taher El-Sunni, issued a statement on Thursday during a Security Council session on behalf of the Arab Group, expressing the Arab states’ condemnation of the repeated military escalation by the Israeli occupation forces against Syria, a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter, and a threat to the security and safety of the entire region.

Al-Sunni articulated that these attacks are not only a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and a threat to its territorial integrity but also a flagrant disregard for the relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 242, 338 and 497, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan, a flagrant breach of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and a clear violation of the mandate of the United Nations forces operating in the region.

For his part, Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amar Benjamaa, expressed in a statement on behalf of the African member states of the Security Council (Algeria, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Guyana), , the concern of these countries over the Israeli military escalation against Syria, which comes at a critical stage in its history, and their strong condemnation of the air strikes and military operations that violate international law, including the United Nations Charter.

The Algerian delegate pointed out that the Israeli escalation and statements regarding the continued presence of Israeli forces in Syria indefinitely contribute to destabilization and threaten regional peace and security.

He called for an immediate halt to attacks against Syrian infrastructure and the need for full respect for the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, including provisions related to the separation zone.

The Algerian official, on behalf of the African countries, called for an end to the Israeli aggression and a full withdrawal of the occupation forces from Syrian territory, stressing that the Golan Heights was occupied Syrian territory as affirmed in Security Council Resolution 497.
