Vienna, Oct. 20 (SANA) Syria reaffirmed its commitment to combating organized crime and strengthening regional and international cooperation against drug smuggling networks and other forms of illicit trafficking at a United Nations conference in Vienna on Tuesday.
Brig. Gen. Abdul Rahim Jabara, head of the International Cooperation Department at Syria’s Ministry of Interior and head of the Syrian delegation, made the remarks during the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, held at UN headquarters in the Austrian capital.
Jabara said Syria was working to develop a comprehensive national strategy to prevent crime and strengthen the criminal justice system, helping improve national efforts to address emerging security challenges.
He stressed the importance of expanding cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and member states through greater information and expertise sharing and institutional capacity-building. Combating transnational organized crime requires effective international coordination and cooperation, he added.

Syria’s participation reflects its efforts to strengthen its presence in international forums focused on combating transnational organized crime and broaden cooperation with relevant countries and international organizations.
The UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, known as the Palermo Convention, is a key international framework for combating organized crime, including drug and human trafficking, migrant smuggling and money laundering.
The convention provides mechanisms for judicial and security cooperation among countries to support joint efforts to address cross-border criminal threats.
