Tartous, Oct. 4 (SANA) Tartous has launched an eco-friendly products market on Sunday aimed at turning reusable and recycled materials into marketable goods, as local environmental authorities seek to reduce waste while supporting artisans and small producers.
Organized by the Tartous Environment Directorate in cooperation with the Arab Cultural Center and local development groups, the market brought together environmental associations, artisans and volunteers.
Held at the Arab Cultural Center as part of a Syrian Environment Project initiative promoting the sorting of solid waste at source, the market featured handicrafts made from recycled wood, paper and fabrics, alongside other environmentally friendly products.
Turning waste into resources
Tartous Environment Director Mohammad Saleh told SANA the initiative seeks to encourage sustainable consumption and move consumers away from practices that generate greater quantities of waste.
Promoting products made from reusable or recyclable materials can help reduce waste while supporting local producers and encouraging innovation linked to environmental protection, Saleh said.
Authorities are considering establishing a permanent market for eco-friendly products or holding the event periodically during the summer, he added. A larger exhibition is also being prepared for November to coincide with the national holiday.
Supporting local producers
Among the participants, Sara Saleh showcased herbal products from her traditional Arab medicine project, saying the market helps local projects reach more consumers and promote their products.
Engineer Mirna Youssef, who teaches children paper crafts, highlighted how discarded paper can instead be turned into artwork. She said such activities can also develop children’s patience, concentration and creativity while teaching them the value of manual work.
The initiative aims to strengthen a culture of reuse and recycling while giving local producers a platform to develop and market more sustainable products.
