Damascus, Sep. 4 (SANA) Two mass weddings were held in the towns of Jubb’adin and Saqba in Damascus countryside on Friday, bringing together 51 grooms as part of community initiatives to support young people and ease the financial burden of marriage.
In Jubb’adin, 34 grooms took part in an initiative organized in cooperation between the municipal council and residents. Mohammad Youssef Issa, deputy chairman of the municipal council, said preparations began about a month ago and participants were selected through a registration survey.
The initiative provided the grooms with basic household items and clothing, organized a wedding banquet and covered the wedding expenses, Issa said.
Mohammad Bilal Hassoun, 30, one of the grooms, said marriage costs had been a major financial burden and that the initiative helped ease part of it. Mohammad Youssef Abada, 26, praised the municipal council and residents for supporting young people and organizing the event.
In Saqba, the Marriage and Family Support Association organized a mass wedding for 17 grooms. Hassan Sadiq, the association’s legal officer, said beneficiaries were selected based on their needs and financial circumstances while ensuring fairness and equal opportunities.
The association provided wedding equipment, supplies and basic necessities, helping reduce part of the costs of marriage, Sadiq said, adding that it plans to organize similar initiatives and expand the number of beneficiaries.
The event revived an old social tradition in the governorate and marked the first mass wedding in Jubb’adin since liberation, following a suspension of about 15 years.
