Washington Oct. 3 (SANA) — The U.S. Coast Guard said it had intercepted a vessel carrying fuel to Cuba for violating the oil embargo imposed on the country.

Agence France-Presse quoted the U.S. Coast Guard as saying in a statement on Friday that a Coast Guard team boarded the MV Grace in the Caribbean Sea in early September while the vessel was en route to Cuba carrying fuel.

The statement said the vessel was believed to have used methods commonly associated with the so-called “dark fleet”, a term used to describe vessels that conceal their ownership or destination while transporting sanctioned or high-risk goods.

The Coast Guard said the vessel was escorted to the port of Progreso in eastern Mexico, where the Mexican Navy confirmed that significant quantities of fuel were found in its ballast tanks.

The U.S. Coast Guard had previously intercepted and detained the Gaira Provider after reports indicated that the vessel was illegally transporting fuel to Cuba.
