Deir Ezzor, Sept. 1 (SANA) Four children were killed and another was injured when an unidentified object exploded in a village in eastern Syria’s Deir Ezzor province on Monday, local officials and the family of the injured child said.
The explosion occurred in Faydat Ibn Muwaina village in the Mayadeen countryside as the children were handling the object.
Deir Ezzor Health Director Nasr al-Alwan told SANA that two children were brought to the National Hospital following the blast. One died, while the other was receiving treatment.
Aziz al-Faleh, the father of the injured child, said four children were killed in the explosion and his son was wounded.
The incident follows an earlier explosion involving an unidentified object in al-Kubar town in the Deir Ezzor countryside that injured two children.
A Syrian Network for Human Rights report issued on April 4 documented the deaths of at least 3,799 civilians, including 1,000 children and 377 women, from landmines and cluster munition remnants in Syria between March 2011 and April 2026.
Of those, 329 civilians, including 65 children and 29 women, were killed after the fall of the deposed regime on Dec. 8, 2024.
Mine-clearance operations have continued across Syria in 2026. Teams from the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management carried out 981 operations to remove unexploded ordnance in the first half of the year, alongside surveys and risk-awareness activities.
In early August, Defense Ministry engineering teams destroyed 1,500 landmines from a minefield near Qarah in the Damascus countryside as part of efforts to secure contaminated areas.
