Damascus, July 31 (SANA) Traffic accidents remain a major public safety concern in Syria, with one person killed and 17 others injured in crashes and fires over the past 24 hours, the Syrian Civil Defense said on Friday.
Civil Defense teams responded to 13 traffic accidents that left one person dead and 16 others injured. Rescue teams provided first aid at the scene before transferring the injured to hospitals for treatment, while also clearing and securing the accident sites.
The Civil Defense also responded to 115 fires, including blazes in homes, commercial premises, grasslands, trees, garbage dumps and electrical cables. One person was injured and treated at the scene, while the remaining incidents caused material damage only.
Road accidents remain a major challenge
Two days earlier, three people were killed and 24 others injured in separate traffic accidents and fires to which Civil Defense teams responded across the country.
According to Civil Defense statistics, emergency crews responded to 1,412 traffic accidents between Jan. 1 and July 20, resulting in 81 deaths and 1,299 injuries.
The high rate of road accidents has continued this year. Authorities recorded 540 traffic accidents in June, leaving 25 people dead and 537 injured, followed by 516 accidents in July that killed 64 people and injured 604 others.
Official data from the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management and the Civil Defense indicate that traffic accidents remain one of Syria’s most significant public safety challenges, causing significant casualties and property damage on highways, main roads and secondary roads despite ongoing efforts to improve road safety.
A review of official data issued through July 30, 2026, shows traffic accidents continue to occur across all Syrian governorates, underscoring the need to strengthen road safety measures, improve infrastructure and enhance compliance with traffic regulations.
