Damascus, July 26 (SANA) Syria’s People’s Assembly convened its second session of the current legislative term on Sunday, with lawmakers beginning debate on a draft set of internal rules that will govern the chamber’s legislative procedures and operations.

The session, chaired by Speaker Abdul Hamid al-Awak, opened with the Assembly Bureau presenting a report on the preparation of the draft rules of procedure. Lawmakers then discussed a report submitted by a temporary committee tasked with drafting the regulations.

According to the Assembly, the 17-member committee completed the preliminary draft after it underwent legal review, clearing the way for lawmakers to debate and vote on the document during Sunday’s session.

In a statement posted on its Telegram channel, the Assembly said the committee was established by a decision of Speaker al-Awak and held a series of meetings over four days last week to prepare the initial draft.

The rules of procedure are expected to establish the framework governing the Assembly’s legislative work, including parliamentary procedures, committee operations and the conduct of legislative sessions.

The People’s Assembly held its inaugural session on July 12 in the presence of President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections Chairman Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad, the Assembly’s 206 members and several ministers.

During the inaugural session, lawmakers took the constitutional oath and elected Abdul Hamid al-Awak as Speaker, Mustafa Mousa as First Deputy Speaker, Madonna Beshara as Second Deputy Speaker and Moayad Habib as Secretary of the Assembly.
